Vaccon’s VDF Series (variable vacuum & variable flow) venturi pumps and cups pick and places tomatoes for slicing in a food processing operation. Whole tomatoes are picked up from a conveyor belt by individual VDF pumps on a robotic end-of-arm-tool, and then placed into individual cups for slicing. VDF pumps are field adjustable allowing machine operators to set the vacuum level and vacuum flow to meet their specific application requirements, in this case to securely hold the tomatoes without bruising or damaging the fruit. By consuming only the compressed air needed for the job, VDF pumps are energy efficient providing high performance processing while ensuring quality control.
Tomatoes can be crushed during the slicing operation leaving behind seeds, pulp and skin. The VDF’s straight-through design allows food debris to pass through without clogging making them ideal for use in food processing applications. By combining the high flow VDF venturi pumps with flexible bellows cups that conform to the fruit’s curved and uneven surfaces, Vaccon provided a secure yet gentle holding force to handle the tomatoes and automate production.
To save space and minimize costs, Vaccon engineers designed a custom stainless steel VDF pump to fit the customer’s existing equipment. Vaccon pumps and cups are available in a variety of food grade materials for environmental and chemical compatibility.
